Why People Risk Their Lives To Harvest Açaí | True Cost | Business Insider

Most of the world’s açaí comes from the Amazon rainforest. People risk their lives to harvest the fruit, climbing palm trees that can grow taller than 50 feet. And while açaí has become one of the trendiest superfoods in recent decades, small farmers aren’t seeing a lot of the profits. The açaí industry has also taken heat over reports of child labor. We went to Brazil to find out how the world’s açaí gets from the Amazon to smoothie shops around the world. How 40,000 Tons Of Brazil Nuts Are Collected Deep In The Amazon Rainforest | Big Business

Brazil nuts are one of the most sustainable nuts. They're not grown on farms. They're collected in the rainforest after they drop naturally off wild trees. While the nuts support Indigenous tribes' livelihoods, collectors have a tough job. They have to hike deep into the jungle, avoiding deadly falling nuts and wildlife, all to haul 100-pound loads back out. And now their industry is at risk because of low prices for their nuts and illegal clear-cutting of the rainforest. We visit the Apiaká tribe in Mato Grosso, Brazil, to see how they're using Brazil nuts as a weapon against deforestation. Editor's Note: At 0:37, 4:06, and 4:59, this video incorrectly used tons instead of kilos as a unit of measurement. At 6:11, this video also incorrectly stated that Brazil nuts are one of the cheapest nuts. Insider regrets the errors. To learn more, visit: https://www.equatorinitiative.org/2019/07/31/conselho-indigena-de-roraima/ Founded in 1990 to advocate for the autonomy of the indigenous peoples in Brazil’s northernmost state, Conselho Indígena de Roraima (Indigenous Council of Roraima) brings together nearly 55,000 indigenous people from the Macuxi, Wapichana, Taurepang, Ingarikó, Wai-Wai, Yanomami, Ye'kuana, Patamona, and Sapará groups. In 2010, the group achieved the demarcation of the 1.7 million-hectare territory of Raposa Serra do Sol. In a complementary initiative to ensure sustainable management of their land, Conselho Indígena de Roraima created the Indigenous Training and Culture Center Raposa Serra do Sol (CIFCRSS) in 1996 to provide training to indigenous peoples of Roraima in agroecology practices, promoting crop diversity, and strengthening the conservation of traditional seeds. These activities contribute to the resilience of these groups against the effects of climate change. The organization continues to advocate for recognition of indigenous tenure rights. ‘Hulk’ Brothers Risk Death By Injecting Muscle-Building Chemicals | HOOKED ON THE LOOK

SUBSCRIBE to Barcroft TV: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj BROTHERS Tony ‘Hulk’ Geraldo and Alvaro ‘Conan’ Pereira, have both injected dangerous chemicals to make them look HUGE. As well as using extreme lengths to bulk up to a combined weight of 241kg, the brothers from Rio, Brazil, attend the same gym everyday and work out together for hours to improve their definition. Tony, 49, and Alvaro, 50, claim there was a time when they were ‘addicted to getting big’ but now believe they have it under control. Alvaro had been injecting his biceps and legs with a supplement - called Potenay B12 - on and off since he was 15 years old. Tony followed in his older brother’s footsteps. Taking their doctors advice, the brothers claim to have recently stopped injecting for health reasons and because their skin cannot stretch anymore. Killer Wins Beauty Pageant In Women's Prison | TRULY

SUBSCRIBE to Barcroft TV: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj A PRISON beauty pageant has been won by a woman convicted of murdering her lover – and now she wants to be a model. In its thirteenth year, the annual Miss Talavera Bruce beauty pageant is held in unlikely surroundings: a women’s prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Instituto Penal Talavera is the only maximum-security women’s prison in the city with inmates serving life sentences for murder, fraud and drug trafficking. But for one day each year, a handful of the inmates are judged on something other than their crimes: ‘their beauty and attitude’ as they vie for the first place sash and title of Miss Talavera Bruce - or ‘TB Girl’ as it is referred to. Out of the estimated hundreds of inmates at the prison, only 10 make it the pageant, the selection based on behaviour records. As well as dressing up and getting their hair and makeup done, the pageant provides a rare opportunity to see beloved family members somewhere other than the visitation room – and in some cases it’s the only time inmates get to see their children.
